Austronesia is the broad geographic and cultural area where Austronesian languages are spoken, stretching from Madagascar across Island Southeast Asia to the Pacific Islands. It is not a single country or political unit, but a linguistic-cultural zone linking many different island societies. Austronesian languages in Cambodia, notably Cham and Jarai, are spoken by small indigenous minorities alongside the dominant Austroasiatic (Khmer) language sphere.
