In this sandstone Devi (នាងទេវី neang tevi), the grace of Khmer womanhood takes sculptural form, from the high jata coiffure to the soft curve of the sampot-clad hips. Carved in the Sambor Prei Kuk style of the 7th century, she reflects the artistic brilliance of Isanavarman’s capital at Isanapura in today’s Kampong Thom province. Even without divine attributes, this quiet, poised figure radiates timeless Cambodian femininity, inviting us to meet the goddess as an idealized Khmer woman. This statue is on display at the National Museum in Phnom Penh.
