NCKL refers to the National Council of Khmer Language (Khmer: ក្រុមប្រឹក្សាជាតិភាសាខ្មែរ), the body under the Royal Academy of Cambodia that produces the official modern Khmer dictionary.

Official NCKL dictionary

  • The council has released an updated “Khmer Dictionary 2022” as the new standard reference, after more than five decades since the last major edition.
  • This dictionary updates older entries, adds many new terms (especially for technology, economics, and globalization), and includes pronunciation and grammatical categories.

Where to access it

  • Web/PC: Many sources propose to download the NCKL Khmer dictionary for free. Just search “Khmer Dictionary 2022 5.0”. To date, there is no version for Mac.
  • Mobile apps: The official “Khmer Dictionary 2022” application by the Royal Academy of Cambodia is available on Google Play and the iOS App Store; it is the NCKL’s own digital version of the dictionary.

Extra practical notes

  • The dictionary exists both as printed volumes and as digital tools, so you can choose between physical books and the app/web versions.
  • NCKL also provides many more linguistic resources, including some specialized lexicons.
