Introduction
Kampong Chhnang (កំពង់ឆ្នាំង) is one of Cambodia’s central provinces, known for its rich cultural heritage, agricultural significance, and scenic landscapes. Located along the Tonlé Sap River, this province plays a vital role in Cambodia’s economy, particularly in pottery production, fishing, and rice farming. With a mix of bustling markets, traditional Khmer villages, and natural attractions, Kampong Chhnang offers a glimpse into Cambodia’s rural life and artisanal traditions.
This article explores the geography, history, economy, culture, and tourism potential of Kampong Chhnang, highlighting why it remains an essential yet underrated destination in Cambodia.

Geography and Climate
Kampong Chhnang is situated in central Cambodia, bordered by:
– Kampong Thom to the north
– Kampong Speu to the south
– Pursat to the west
– Kandal and Kampong Cham to the east
The province covers an area of 5,521 square kilometers and is divided into eight districts:
1. Kampong Chhnang Municipality (capital)
2. Baribour
3. Chol Kiri
4. Kampong Leng
5. Kampong Tralach
6. Rolea B’ier
7. Sameakki Meanchey
8. Tuek Phos
The province’s landscape is characterized by fertile plains, riverside communities, and forested areas. The Tonlé Sap River flows through the province, supporting agriculture and fishing. The climate is tropical, with a wet season (May–October) and a dry season (November–April).

Historical Significance
Kampong Chhnang has a long history dating back to the Chenla and Angkorian periods. The name “Kampong Chhnang” translates to “Port of Pottery,” reflecting its ancient tradition of pottery-making, which has been practiced for centuries.
Key Historical Highlights:
– Pre-Angkorian Era: Evidence of early settlements, with pottery artifacts found in the region;
– Angkorian Period: The province was part of the Khmer Empire, with some temples and ruins still present;
– French Colonial Era: Kampong Chhnang became an administrative center, with infrastructure developments such as roads and bridges;
– Modern Cambodia: Today, it remains an agricultural and artisanal hub, preserving traditional crafts.

Economy and Livelihoods
Kampong Chhnang’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, fishing, and handicrafts.
1. Agriculture
– Rice farming is the dominant activity, with vast paddies covering the province;
– Other crops include corn, cassava, mangoes, and vegetables;
– The fertile soil and access to water from the Tonlé Sap make it ideal for farming.
2. Fishing
– The Tonlé Sap River and surrounding wetlands provide abundant fish, a staple in the Cambodian diet;
– Many families rely on small-scale fishing for income and food.
3. Pottery and Handicrafts
– Kampong Chhnang is famous for its traditional pottery, made using age-old techniques;
– Villages like Andong Russey are pottery-making centers;
– Products include cooking pots, jars, and decorative items, sold locally and exported.
4. Trade and Commerce
– The province serves as a trade link between Phnom Penh and northwestern Cambodia;
– Kampong Chhnang Market is a bustling hub for local goods.

Culture and Traditions
Kampong Chhnang is deeply rooted in Khmer culture, with strong traditions in craftsmanship, festivals, and daily rural life.
1. Pottery-Making Tradition
– Passed down through generations, pottery-making remains a symbol of the province;
– Artisans use hand-turned wheels and wood-fired kilns;
– The craft is celebrated in local festivals and tourism promotions.
2. Religious and Cultural Festivals
– Khmer New Year (April): Celebrated with games, dancing, and temple visits;
– Pchum Ben (Ancestors’ Festival): A time for honoring deceased relatives;
– Water Festival (Bon Om Touk): Features boat races on the Tonlé Sap.
3. Traditional Cuisine
– Local dishes include fish amok, prahok (fermented fish), and fresh river fish;
– Sticky rice and tropical fruits are also staples.

Tourism and Attractions
Though less touristy than Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, Kampong Chhnang offers unique attractions:
1. Kampong Chhnang Pottery Villages
– Andong Russey: A key pottery village where visitors can watch artisans at work.
2. Phnom Santuk (Santuk Mountain)
– A sacred hill with a pagoda and panoramic views of the countryside;
– Popular for hiking and religious pilgrimages.
3. Tonlé Sap River and Floating Villages
– Kampong Chhnang Port: A lively riverside area with boat tours;
– Floating communities: Witness the unique lifestyle of fishing families.
4. Wat Kampong Chhnang
– A historic Buddhist temple with intricate carvings and statues.
5. Kampong Chhnang Market
– A great place to buy local pottery, fresh produce, and handicrafts.
6. Kampong Leng District
– Known for its scenic countryside and traditional farming practices.

Challenges and Development
Despite its cultural richness, Kampong Chhnang faces several challenges:
– Limited infrastructure for tourism compared to other provinces;
– Environmental pressures from deforestation and overfishing;
– Economic migration of youth to urban areas.
However, efforts are being made to:
– Promote eco-tourism and community-based tourism;
– Preserve traditional crafts through workshops and fairs;
– Improve road connectivity to boost trade and travel.

Kampong Chhnang is a hidden gem in Cambodia, offering a blend of traditional craftsmanship, agricultural life, and natural beauty. While it may not have the grandeur of Angkor Wat or the bustle of Phnom Penh, its authentic charm makes it a fascinating destination for travelers seeking a deeper understanding of Cambodia’s rural culture.
From the pottery villages along the river to the lush rice fields and vibrant markets, Kampong Chhnang embodies the heart of Cambodia’s traditions. With increased attention and sustainable development, it has the potential to become a key cultural and eco-tourism destination in the years to come.
For those looking to explore Cambodia beyond the usual tourist trails, Kampong Chhnang offers an unforgettable journey into the country’s artisanal soul.
