During Pchum Ben, Cambodia’s annual festival for honoring ancestors, food offerings are made to Buddhist monks in the hope of relieving the suffering of spirits such as pretas (Khmer: ប្រេត), allowing them peace and a better rebirth. Pretas are often portrayed as pitiful beings eternally tormented by hunger and thirst that can never be satisfied.
