Cambodia’s New International Gateway
Techo International Airport (Khmer: អាកាសយានដ្ឋានអន្តរជាតិតេជោ akas hien than ândaracheat techo) (IATA: KTI, ICAO: VDTI) lies 30 kilometers south of Phnom Penh, replacing the former Pochentong International Airport as the nation’s premier hub for global and regional air traffic. With the first commercial flights landing on 9 September 2025, this sprawling facility now symbolizes Cambodia’s modernization and its integration into international aviation networks. The state-of-the-art airport is not just an infrastructure project; it is a bold statement of the country’s aspirations for tourism, business, and economic growth.
A Vision Embodied in Architecture
The design of Techo International Airport is a collaborative feat, led by the renowned Foster + Partners, and draws inspiration from Khmer heritage while addressing the demands of modern air travel. The jewel of the complex is the terminal: a vast, light-filled structure inspired by Cambodian motifs, including elements reminiscent of the traditional Apsara headdress, and romduol, Cambodia’s national flower. The terminal’s roof is a sweeping, steel canopy spanning up to 36 meters, supported by ‘structural trees’ that evoke the Cambodian landscape and filter sunlight through the interior. This blend of tradition and technology gives the space warmth and clarity—essential for reducing passenger stress and making navigation intuitive.
The interior is intentionally open, with minimal level changes and clear sightlines from check-in to airside. Warm colors and natural materials link the terminal’s identity to Cambodia’s vernacular style in a contemporary fashion. Beyond aesthetics, the terminal stands out for its ambitious sustainability features, including abundant greenery, mature trees, gardens incorporated within the terminal, and extensive use of solar energy, aspiring to be one of the world’s greenest airports.
A Megaproject in Scope and Scale
Situated on a 2,600-hectare site in Kandal Province, Techo International Airport is among the largest worldwide by land area, with plans for airport-linked urban and commercial development. The first phase features a single four-kilometer runway, capable of serving the world’s largest passenger aircraft including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8. The master plan allows for up to three runways and a peak design capacity of 50 million passengers per year in the coming decades, a quantum leap for Cambodian aviation.
The new head house centralizes all key functions—security, immigration, retail, and passenger services—under a single massive roof. The initial 22 gates can accommodate up to 40 aircraft, and a 118-meter air traffic control tower dominates the facility for optimal safety and efficiency. Supporting infrastructure includes extensive cargo handling, fuel storage, VIP facilities, and state-of-the-art maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities developed in partnership with international aviation engineering firms.
Construction, Investment, and Ownership
The idea for a completely new capital airport emerged in 2016, following years of rapid growth that pushed Pochentong Airport past its limits. Officially launched in 2018, the undertaking involved the Cambodia Airport Investment Company—a joint venture between the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC) and the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA). With total investment estimated at $1.5 billion (excluding land costs), groundbreaking began in 2019. The airport was named “Techo”—a Khmer term for strength and leadership—by former Prime Minister Hun Sen, referencing historic army commanders and embracing the bold, forward-looking vision of the project. Techo (Khmer: តេជោ) is also the title used by M. Hun Sen.
Capacity, Connectivity, and Integration
Phase one of Techo International Airport is now able to handle 13 to 15 million passengers per year, with modular expansion planned: phase two will boost capacity to 30 million, and phase three to as many as 50 million annual passengers. Cargo operations are similarly robust, with a first-phase capacity of around 175,000 tons per annum. The airport is designed for the highest ICAO classification (4F), meaning it can host the largest widebody jets and operate with three full-length parallel runways when fully built out.
Techo is conceptualized as a multimodal hub, with new highways that will connect it directly to Phnom Penh, and eventual plans for elevated rail lines linking the airport to the city and wider regional transport networks. As Cambodia’s new commercial aviation epicenter, it serves as a hub for airlines such as Air Cambodia, Cambodia Airways, and Sky Angkor Airlines, opening direct routes to China, ASEAN countries, and beyond.
Economic Impact and Regional Role
The opening of Techo International Airport is projected to transform the Cambodian tourism industry by dramatically increasing the country’s ability to welcome business and leisure travelers. The timing aligns with renewed post-pandemic tourism and robust economic growth—Cambodia’s pre-pandemic GDP averaged nearly 7%, one of Asia’s highest rates. By providing world-class facilities and streamlined connections, the airport positions Cambodia to compete with Southeast Asian powerhouses like Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Singapore’s Changi.
In addition to tourism, the airport is expected to boost trade, foreign investment, and business travel, strengthening Cambodia’s integration into global and regional supply chains. Urban planners envision an “airport city” developing around the site, with commercial, residential, and logistics uses forming a new economic zone that drives further development in Kandal Province.
Passenger Experience and Sustainability
Travelers will note the emphasis on comfort, efficiency, and sustainability. Features like naturally lit terminal halls, vertical gardens, and the use of solar power distinguish Techo International Airport as both modern and eco-conscious. Passengers benefit from efficient security and immigration controls, streamlined walking distances, and high-quality retail and food options reflecting both international standards and Cambodian hospitality.
The Future of Cambodian Aviation
The inauguration of Techo International Airport on September 9, 2025 was marked by water salute ceremonies, dignitaries, and the arrival of the first commercial flights—signaling a new era for Cambodian air travel. As Cambodia grows and integrates further with Southeast Asia and the world, Techo International Airport is set to be a catalyst for change—opening new horizons for the kingdom’s economy, its people, and its global presence.
