The areca nut (or betel nut) (Khmer: ស្លា sla) is extracted from the ripe areca fruit. Betel nut is traditionally chewed in Cambodia and throughout Southeast Asia as part of important ceremonies, such as weddings and ancestor rituals. Chewing betel nut symbolizes hospitality, respect, and social connection, but the custom is declining with younger generations. A typical quid combines areca nut, betel leaf, and slaked lime, providing a mild stimulant effect and staining the mouth red.
