1. National Assembly Passes Citizenship Revocation Law

Cambodia’s National Assembly has approved a constitutional amendment allowing the government to revoke citizenship from individuals accused of treason or collusion with foreign entities. While officials claim this protects national security, human rights groups warn it could target political dissidents. Justice Minister Koeut Rith compared the law to similar measures in other democracies.

2. Border Tensions with Thailand

4. Human Trafficking and Chinese Mafia Operations

Exiled opposition leader Sam Rainsy claimed that over 120,000 people are enslaved by Chinese criminal syndicates in Cambodia, a figure supported by recent Amnesty International reports. These syndicates, operating scam centers and casinos, reportedly have protection from political elites, with abuses including trafficking and torture.

Khmer-language media covered labor union protests, criminal investigations, and major infrastructure projects such as new railways and bridges. The government marked 25 years of peace as a foundation for development, with calls for nationwide celebrations and continued crackdowns on crime.

7. Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Included in UNESCO World Heritage List

The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, along with the former M-13 Prison and Choeung Ek Genocidal Centre, has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2025. These sites are recognized for their historical significance as principal memorials of the Khmer Rouge regime’s atrocities.

  • Tuol Sleng, formerly known as Security Prison 21 (S-21), was a notorious interrogation and torture center where an estimated 20,000 people were imprisoned.
  • The inscription highlights the universal significance of these sites in remembering the victims and educating the public about the crimes committed during the Khmer Rouge era.
  • The inclusion strengthens Cambodia’s efforts to preserve these sites as places of remembrance and international historical importance.
