Language: Common Misspellings in Modern Khmer

Khmer spelling presents real challenges, even for fluent native speakers. Consonant series, visually similar vowel signs, and subtle sound contrasts often cause confusion in handwriting, messaging apps, and informal online posts. The problem becomes even more complex with the large number of high‑register words borrowed from Sanskrit and Pali: their historical consonant clusters, silent letters, and inherited spellings frequently diverge from modern Khmer pronunciation, so learners cannot simply “write what they hear.”

This short PDF is designed as a practical reference rather than a theoretical textbook. It gathers the most frequent misspellings seen in schoolwork, street signs, social media, and everyday documents, placing each incorrect form beside the correct spelling in clear, legible type. Special attention is given to Sanskrit–Pali loanwords used in religion, law, administration, and formal writing, since these terms regularly trip up both students and professionals. By reviewing these pages, readers can quickly identify their own recurring mistakes, strengthen their internal “spelling memory,” and gain confidence when writing Khmer for exams, teaching materials, or polished public content.
