Proverb: Hard work isn’t just hot air!

រពឹសដៃ ផ្ទៃឆ្អែត literally means “busy hands, full stomach.” It expresses the idea that those who keep their hands busy with honest work will keep their stomach full. This Khmer proverb emphasizes the importance of manual and honest labor as the key to living a decent life. It encourages action and effort rather than idleness, for abundance comes through hard work. Traditionally, it is used in a rural or farming context.

However, the saying also reminds that work must be done properly and honestly; active hands in the wrong direction can cause trouble. In essence, this proverb upholds the dignity of manual labor and the prosperity that results from it.

Vocabulary:

  • រពឹស (ropeuh): to be active, busy, or to work diligently.
  • ដៃ (day): hand; here it symbolizes manual work or the act of working.
  • ផ្ទៃ (phtei): stomach; symbolizes the basic need for sustenance (to eat, to live well).
  • ឆ្អែត (chh’aet): full, satisfied; signifies abundance or not lacking.
