Some key vegetables essential to Chinese cuisine are not cultivated in Cambodia and are therefore imported directly from China. In the photograph below, taken at a vegetable stall in Phnom Penh’s Central Market, several such Chinese vegetables can be seen inside the red-marked rectangle. From left to right, they include stem lettuce, lotus root, burdock root, water chestnut, edamame, wild rice stem, and, positioned below, wax gourd.
