Winter melon (Benincasa hispida, Khmer: ត្រឡាច trâ-lach) is a remarkable member of the gourd family, valued for both its nutritional and horticultural properties. Native to Southeast Asia, the winter melon thrives in warm climates and well-drained soils, yet its mature fruit is harvested at the onset of cooler seasons, giving rise to its name. The fruit’s mild flavor and versatility make it an important ingredient in Asian cuisines, while its impressive size—sometimes exceeding 50cm in length—demonstrates the power of selective breeding.
