22 Southeast Asian Filmmakers Explore Cambodia Through KARRE MOUY

Siem Reap recently became a meeting point for a new generation of Southeast Asian filmmakers, as 22 emerging talents gathered for the seven-day KARRE MOUY Film Mentoring Program from August 10 to 16, 2026. Participants from Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Myanmar worked on nine original short film projects, preparing them for an international funding pitch later this year.

Organized in Siem Reap rather than Phnom Penh for this year’s edition, the program combined practical filmmaking skills with creative development. Participants received mentoring in scriptwriting, production planning, budgeting, legal frameworks, grant applications, and pitch deck preparation. The aim was not simply to develop films, but to give young producers the tools to take Southeast Asian stories beyond their local markets and toward international audiences.

The choice of Siem Reap also added an important cultural and tourism dimension. During the program, participants visited Angkor Archaeological Park, the UNESCO World Heritage site that has made Siem Reap one of Cambodia’s best-known cultural destinations. The excursion offered filmmakers an opportunity to experience Cambodia’s heritage while discovering locations that could inspire future productions. From ancient temples and traditional arts to dramatic natural landscapes, Cambodia offers an unusually diverse backdrop for cinema.

Film tourism is increasingly part of Cambodia’s wider tourism strategy. According to the Cambodia Tourism Board, the country is developing initiatives to attract international productions and strengthen its position as a filming destination. Cambodia’s potential extends well beyond Angkor, encompassing Tonle Sap, the Cardamom Rainforest, Koh Rong and the rapidly evolving creative scene of Phnom Penh.

The KARRE MOUY program will reach its next major milestone in October, when participating filmmakers return for an official pitching session. They will present their projects to industry judges and compete for grants and additional in-kind support. For Cambodia’s young filmmakers, and for the wider Southeast Asian creative community, the initiative offers more than professional training. It creates connections, encourages regional collaboration, and helps turn local stories into films capable of reaching audiences around the world.
