Picture of the day: Elephant Trunks at Victory Gate, Angkor Thom

A quiet moment at the inner side of Victory Gate in Angkor Thom, where ancient stone elephant trunks still hold the power of the site’s royal past. The weathered carvings feel both monumental and intimate, inviting the eye to linger on texture, age, and sacred craftsmanship. In Siem Reap, this corner of Angkor reveals how Khmer artistry turns stone into memory.

Thanks man. I’m a history nerd for the Americas. I’m going to be moving to Battambang in 2028 and I’m excited to go to the Khmer/Angkor ruins. I don’t know much about them or the ancient culture but I’ve been soaking up all I can from documentaries.

Part of the reason I want to learn Khmer is I figure that that most of the literature and journal papers about the Angkor Empire would be written in Khmer. The alphabet is a PitA but even that has an artistic flow to it…

Cambodia is a beautiful country and is home to people who are just as beautiful, not just physically but in their actions and sense of community.
