Picture of the day: New Year Angel Altar at Wat Sophy, Takeo

On the eve of Khmer New Year 2026, this bright altar at Sophy Pagoda, in Takeo province, waits quietly for the arrival of the protective New Year angel who descends at the astrologers’ appointed hour to bless the year ahead. Offerings of fruit, sweets, candles, and incense are carefully arranged beneath painted scenes from the Buddha’s life, turning the pagoda’s veranda into a small cosmos of light, color, and fragrant smoke. In the soft April heat, the altar becomes both a spiritual gateway and a neighborhood landmark, where villagers pause to pray for health, prosperity, and gentle transitions into the Cambodian New Year.
