The fruit of the cannonball tree is a heavy, brown, woody sphere that can reach around 25 cm in diameter and fall with a dramatic thud from the trunk. It holds a soft, whitish pulp packed with dozens to hundreds of seeds, which quickly turns bluish on contact with air and emits a strong, unpleasant odor. Edible but rarely eaten, it is valued more for its striking appearance in temple courtyards and botanical gardens than for its taste.
