A dvārapāla (Khmer: ទ្វារបាល tvea-bal), literally “guardian of the gate”, is a deity or monster placed on each side of the entrance of a sanctuary, to protect it. The picture below shows a dvārapāla at Banteay Kdei temple, in the Angkor Archaeologic Park.
