Picture of the day: Sternocera aequisignata, Jewel Beetle of Kratie

Held gently in a villager’s hand, this jewel beetle from Kratie flashes an almost unreal metallic green, catching the Cambodian light like hammered silk. Its species, Sternocera aequisignata, is famed across Southeast Asia for iridescent elytra used in jewelry and traditional crafts, yet here it simply pauses, alive and alert. In Khmer, សត្វកំភេ (sat kâmphé), it reminds us how everyday forest edges still harbor rare, shimmering stories.
